Born on September 4, 1981, Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter is an American singer, songwriter, and businesswoman. She has been hailed as “Queen Bey” and is a well-known 21st-century cultural figure. Rolling Stone has named her one of the greatest vocalists of all time, citing her skill and performances.
When Beyoncé was younger, she began participating in different singing and dancing competitions. As a member of one of the all-time best-selling girl groups, Destiny’s Child, an R&B group, she became well-known in the late 1990s. During their break, Beyoncé’s debut album, Dangerously in Love (2003), was released. The US number-one solo albums B’Day (2006), I Am… Sasha Fierce (2008), and 4 (2011) came next for her. Beyoncé won praise from critics for her experimental visual albums Beyoncé (2013) and Lemonade (2016), which tackled topics like feminism and womanism, after founding her own management company Parkwood Entertainment. She made history by being the first solo artist to have their first seven studio albums debut at number one in the US with her queer-inspired dance album Renaissance (2022).
“Crazy in Love,” “Baby Boy,” “Check On It,” “Irreplaceable,” “If I Were a Boy,” “Halo,” “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It),” “Break My Soul,” and “Cuff It” are some of Beyoncé’s most popular songs on the Billboard Hot 100. Her joint musical endeavors include the musical film Black Is King (2020), which draws inspiration from the soundtrack of The Lion King: The Gift (2019), and Everything Is Love (2018), an album she co-wrote with her husband, rapper Jay-Z, and released under the Carters. Her 2018 Coachella performance, captured on Homecoming: The Live Album (2019), has been hailed as one of the best live albums for its homage to the history of black music. She has acted in movies like Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002), The Pink Panther (2006), Dreamgirls (2006), Cadillac Records (2008), Obsessed (2009), and The Lion King (2019) in addition to her musical career.
Beyoncé is among the all-time greatest-selling musicians with 200 million records sold worldwide. She has received more awards than any other artist in the music business, including a record-tying 32 Grammys, 26 MTV Video Music Awards (including the 2014 Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award), 24 NAACP Image Awards, 35 BET Awards, and 17 Soul Train Music Awards. She was named the Top Certified Artist of the Decade by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the Top Female Artist of the Decade by Billboard as a result of her success in the 2000s. She was named the 2021 Pollstar Touring Artist of the Decade and is the most successful Black touring act in history. She was listed by Time as one of the 100 women who shaped the twenty-first century.
Mezzo-soprano is how critics have described Beyoncé’s voice. Her tone and timbre stand out in particular, according to Jody Rosen, who calls her voice “one of the most compelling instruments in popular music”. Because of her vocal prowess, she is recognized as Destiny’s Child’s focal point. Her voice is described as “velvety yet tart, with an insistent flutter and reserves of soul belting” by Jon Pareles of The New York Times. Rosen points out that Beyoncé’s distinctive rhythmic vocal style was greatly influenced by the hip hop era, but she also uses balladry, gospel, and falsetto in a very traditionalist manner.
As Chris Richards of The Washington Post put it, she was “capable of punctuating any beat with goose-bump-inducing whispers or full-bore diva-roars.” Other critics laud her range and power. Rolling Stone noted that “in [her] voice lies the entire history of Black music” when listing Beyoncé at number eight on their 2023 list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time.
Beyoncé primarily creates pop, hip-hop, and R&B music, but she also mixes soul and funk into her compositions. In contrast to earlier albums, Beyoncé’s 4 showcased her exploration of 1990s-style R&B in addition to her increased use of hip hop and soul. Beyoncé recorded a number of Spanish songs for Irreemplazable, which are re-recordings of B’Day songs for a Spanish-speaking audience, and the re-release of B’Day, despite the fact that she primarily releases English songs. American record producer Rudy Perez phonetically coached Beyoncé to record these.
Michael Jackson is cited by Beyoncé as her main musical inspiration. When Beyoncé saw Michael Jackson perform at her first concert when she was five years old, she says she understood her purpose. Beyoncé declared, “I would never have performed if it weren’t for Michael Jackson,” during her 2006 World Music Awards tribute to him. Tina Turner had a big influence on Beyoncé, who once remarked, “I admire Tina Turner because she made her strength feminine and sexy.”
She cites Whitney Houston as her “inspiration to get up there and do what she did” and Diana Ross as a “all-around entertainer” that she admires. Beyoncé stated that she aspired to “follow in the footsteps of Madonna and be a powerhouse and have my own empire,” citing the singer as an inspiration “not only for her musical style, but also for her business sense.” She also says that when she was younger, Mariah Carey’s singing and the song “Vision of Love” inspired her to start honing her vocal runs. Aaliyah, Janet Jackson, Prince, Shakira, Lauryn Hill, Sade Adu, Donna Summer, Mary J. Blige, Selena, Anita Baker, and Toni Braxton are some of her other musical influences.
Beyoncé drew inspiration for her feminism and female empowerment themes on her second solo album, B’Day, from singer Josephine Baker as well as from her Dreamgirls role. At the 2006 Fashion Rocks concert, Beyoncé honored Baker by performing “Déjà Vu” while donning her signature mini-hula skirt, which was adorned with faux bananas. Beyoncé drew inspiration for her third solo album, I Am… Sasha Fierce, from Etta James in particular, whose “boldness” encouraged her to experiment with different musical genres and styles. Fela Kuti, Earth, Wind & Fire, DeBarge, Lionel Richie, Teena Marie, The Jackson 5, New Edition, Adele, Florence and the Machine, and Prince were the inspirations for her fourth solo album, 4.
Beyoncé has declared that Michelle Obama, the 44th First Lady of the United States, is an inspiration to her personally, stating that “she proves you can do it all.” She has also called Oprah Winfrey “the definition of inspiration and a strong woman.” She has also talked about how Jay-Z continues to inspire her because of his lyrical genius and the challenges he has faced and overcome in his life. “What I find in the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat, I search for in every day in music… he is lyrical and raw,” Beyoncé wrote in a letter expressing her admiration for the artist. Beyoncé mentioned Cher as another fashion icon.
